US Visa and Immigration Options for International Postdocs and Researchers

The session will cover the types of visas used by postdoctoral researchers. Learn about self-sponsored applications, J-1 waivers and other visas, such as the F1 (OPT) and J-1 visas (including J1 waivers), and H-1B/O-1/TN. The webinar will also cover what to do after your postdoc, as you move through your career transitions. Brendan Delaney will discuss the type of issues that the postdocs face in terms of visa transition and how you can build a CV/Resume for purposes of a self-sponsored application in order to continue your career development and/or transition to an employment position. He will also review the recent guidance that was published relating to STEM, and how this affects certain visa applications. The webinar will leave you with some practical information and allow some time for general questions.

Elizabeth Leibach

Elizabeth Leibach is the Executive Director of International Student & Scholar Services who has an extensive and diverse background in international admissions, student and scholar advising, employment-based immigration law, and international programming. International education has been her career path as an active member of NAFSA since 1997. She has held positions in large state, public and private institutions and developed an immigration practice for an attorney in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Brendan Delaney, JD

Brendan Delaney is a partner at the law firm of Frank & Delaney Immigration Law, LLC, an immigration law firm based in Bethesda, MD. A native of Northern Ireland, he joined the firm in December 2000. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., and became a partner in January 2009. He has been invited to speak at the Annual Meeting of the National Postdoctoral Association, and conducts legal seminars at several universities and institutions across the United States on visa issues for postdocs.
