Administrative Regulation

The administrative regulation establishing the policies and procedures for the terms of appointment and employment of postdoctoral scholars and fellows at the University of Kentucky can be found here: AR 5:1 Postdoctoral Scholars, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Visiting Scholars

An important aspect that this regulation covers is the distinction between a postdoctoral scholar and a postdoctoral fellow. This distinction has important ramifications for access to benefits

Postdoctoral scholars

Postdoctoral scholars are postdocs who are usually supported by the sponsoring professor and therefore receive a salary (as opposed to a stipend). This means that they are considered both an employee and a student.

Postdoctoral fellows

Postdoctoral fellows are postdoc who have received a fellowship or training award and therefore receive a stipend (as opposed to salary). This means that they are considered a student (and not an employee).
